Description
Three Hodges Monuments are located about 7 to 11 meters south of the south-east nave buttress in the churchyard of the Church of St. Mary. These three chest tombs commemorate members of the Hodges family. From south to north, they are for Thomas Hodges, who died in 170-, and Mary Hodges, who died in 1722; another Hodges, who died in 1729; and Thomas Hodges, who died in 1768.
All the tombs are made of limestone and feature flat tops with moulded plinths and capping on bases. The tomb of Thomas and Mary Hodges has deeply splayed plinth and capping, with lyre ends that include an open book and cherub head at the ends. The south side has a rectangular panel with elaborately carved projecting moulding and flanking drapery, while the north side is plainer and partially overgrown as of November 1985.
The second monument, for the unnamed Hodges, features lyre ends with high relief cherub heads on the west side and a cartouche on the east. The north side has an oval carved cartouche with flanking floral reliefs, and the south side has a rectangular moulded panel with flanking torch reliefs.
The third tomb for Thomas Hodges includes quarter balusters, cartouche ends, and recessed rectangular side panels.
