Description
Downhouse Farmhouse is an 18th-century farmhouse that has been significantly remodeled in the 19th century. It is constructed of rubble, with some well-dressed and squared stonework on the west gable, and features a Welsh slate roof. The building has a broad frontage with two deep wings at the back, creating a reversed U-plan. There are 19th-century ashlar stacks at the gables, along with a heavy stack at the back right, extending to the ridge of the wing. The west gable includes a buttress or respond at the back angle. The farmhouse is two storeys high with an attic and has a four-windowed facade. Most windows are modern two or three-light casements, except for a two-light 19th-century casement on the first floor, left. The entrance is off-centre on the right and features a six-panel door, two of which are glazed, along with a late 20th-century glazed porch. The left gable has two small two-light casements with wood lintels on the ground floor and a single light above. The wing beyond this is made of dressed stone and has a roof partially covered with stone slate.
Inside, the ground floor on the right has a large open fireplace with a stone hearth and heavy stone cheeks. There are also some 18th-century moulded panel doors and shutters.
