Description

Down Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the late 18th century. It features a front made of limestone ashlar, with coursed limestone on the sides and rear. The roof is covered with stone tiles and has a two-span design with gable ends and parapets. The gable end stacks are made of ashlar and have moulded cornices topped with square yellow clay pots. The building has a square double depth plan and is designed in a Palladian style, standing two stories tall with an attic.

The south front is symmetrical with a 1:3:1 bay arrangement, where the center section projects slightly forward and includes a small pediment with a large oculus. The windows are primarily 12-pane sashes, most of which are replacements, except for two original ones on the ground floor to the left. The central doorway has later additions and features glazed doors. The left-hand (west) return has a three-window arrangement, some of which are blind, with 12 and 6-pane sashes, while those on the right are original. The rear elevation is also symmetrical with three bays, showcasing two and three-light stone mullion windows and a central panelled door that is partly glazed.

Inside, the original front doorway led into an entrance passage, but it now opens directly into a large parlour on the left, which is a derivative of a hall with a very large fireplace, although the chimneypiece has been removed. The ceiling beams in the front right are unchamfered. The stairwell behind the small parlour features dog-leg stairs with stick balusters and a moulded handrail that ramps up to column newels. The drawing room at the rear right is now used as a dining room, while the kitchen at the rear left has a fireplace with a kowtel-moulded stone chimneypiece and a baystone. The first floor and attics have not been inspected.
