Description
This is a late 17th-century millhouse, now divided into two dwellings, located in Painswick. The building is constructed of squared and coursed limestone, with an ashlar front on the left side, and has a hipped roof covered with artificial stone slates. There are stone and brick stacks at the ends and rear of the building. The original plan comprised four units, and the building has three storeys, with a six-window range on the first floor. A late 20th-century door is situated on the right side, and a glazed door is located to the right of centre. Stone lintels top the doors. The windows are stone mullioned, up to three lights, with label moulds above. The left-hand section, Upper Steanbridge Mill, features a continuous label mould over two paired two-light windows and one two-light window to the first floor, and over a four-panelled door set in a chamfered architrave with grouped ground floor windows. Most windows retain their original casements with turnbuckles. A projecting one-storey and attic wing is located on the left, with a stone gable end stack and a two-light stone-mullioned window to the right. While the interior has not been inspected, it is noted to contain original features, including heavy beams, and stop-chamfered spine beams with run-out stops.
