Description

The Old Vicarage is a house dating from around 1865, originally a vicarage and later adapted as a local authority residential home. It is constructed of ashlar limestone with ashlar chimneys and a plain tile roof in two bands of colour, built in a Cotswold style. The house is two storeys with an attic, and has a cross wing to the north and a single-storey service wing to the south, forming a T-shaped plan.

The west front has a parapet-gabled end to the north cross wing on the left, and a similar gable on the right. A canted bay window with a quatrefoil-pierced parapet is set into the left gable. The windows are mullioned and transomed with hood moulds, and have relieving arches above. A corrugated lean-to on the central part of the elevation is not of special interest. The upper floor features a quatrefoil window, and a gabled dormer with triangular-headed lights to the casements. Tall, rectangular ridge chimneys have projecting, modillion-enriched caps. The north end has a parapet-gabled end to the main range and a rectangular single-storey bay window with a quatrefoil-pierced parapet. A large ground floor mullioned and transomed casement is situated to the right. The east side is similar to the west, with a parapet half-gabled dormer over the central section. A pointed-arched porch opening is at the right hand end. The interior has not been inspected. The building is the most imposing on Selsley Hill and is a good example of the High Victorian Cotswold style. Contemporary gatepiers and a retaining wall are located to the west.
