Description
The weir between the River Frome and Kemmett Canal was built around 1759-1760 by John Kemmett as part of the Kemmett Canal, a small branch of the River Frome designed to bypass Churchend Mill and other mills along the river to facilitate the transport of freight towards Stroud. The weir is constructed from stone and timber, with some concrete repairs, and features three arches to manage water flow. It also includes a supported crane that was used to lift goods from the lower level canal basin onto the River Frome, marking the earliest recorded use of goods in containers. This structure is included for its historical significance.
