Description
The main range of farm buildings and barn at Wishanger Farm is a group of structures built in the 19th century, specifically the barn in 1852 and the main range in 1858, both commissioned by Julius Partridge. Constructed from coursed rubble limestone and topped with Welsh slate roofs, the main building faces west and includes a return section at the north end that creates a drive-through porch.
The north side features a two-bay cartshed that connects to the barn, which has porches on both the north and south sides, along with a south outshut. The west front of the main range showcases three gables, with a large ground floor doorway that has a three-centred arch; two of the gables have sliding doors, while the central doorway is now blocked and has a casement window. There is a Tudor-arched loft doorway with hoodmoulds, and each gable contains a Tudor-arched casement window, with the central gable having a slightly larger two-light window. Additionally, there are two more Tudor-arched doorways, each with a loft casement above.
The drive-through porch on the left has large openings supported by timber lintels. At the south end, there is a moulded parapet gable with a large blocked two-light window featuring trefoil heads, and a datestone is located at the apex of the gable. The barn includes parapet gabled porches with four-centred doorways, and above each porch, there are two-light Tudor-arched casements with hoodmoulds. The datestone on the barn is inscribed with 'J P MDCCCLII'. To the right of the south porch, there is an outshut with a catslide roof and a south-facing gable that has a two-light Tudor-arched casement. The barn ends are also gabled with parapets, and the west end features a Tudor-arched loft doorway. The interiors have not been inspected.
A 20th-century cartshed extending south from the barn is not considered of special interest. This group of buildings is an important planned farm complex, which includes a contemporary granary and cartshed located to the west of the main range.
