Description
The two Hewlett monuments, located about 1.5 meters east of the south aisle in the churchyard of the Church of St. Stephen, consist of a pedestal and a chest tomb, both commemorating the Hewlett family. The pedestal tomb has the earliest decipherable date of 1810, while the chest tomb dates from the 1820s. Both monuments are made of sandstone. The pedestal tomb, situated to the south, features a stepped moulded cap, a moulded plinth on a two-step tooled base, and indented corners. It has a fluted frieze adorned with central rosettes and moulded oval panels on each face, which display draped leaf reliefs. At the time of the survey in January 1986, the cap was breaking up, and the entire structure was leaning to the south. The chest tomb has a plain flat top, with sides and ends that are unmoulded and divided into two panels. It is partially overgrown.
