Description
The Vale, Bodnum and Harris Monuments are three pedestal tombs located about 15 to 20 meters south-east of the south porch in the churchyard of the Church of St. Mary. The tombs date from 1787 to 1817, with Joseph Vale's monument from 1787, William Bodnum's from 1809, and William Harris's from 1817. They are made of forest limestone.
The Vale and Bodnum tombs are set together on a large base that was formerly railed, but is now partially overgrown and breaking up. The Vale monument features a stepped cap with a gadrooned top and an acorn finial, an incised edge to the flat top, and a tall moulded plinth with half-round ends. It has a reeded frieze with central rosettes, raised ovals, and palm leaves on the sides. The west end displays a wrapped raised oval, while the east end features a high relief of a weeping draped putto under a tree next to a tomb with an urn.
The Bodnum monument has a square, curved pyramidal cap with a reeded urn finial on a flat top, supported at the corners by reeded columns, although it is broken on the south-west side. It has a plain plinth and plain sides and ends with an incised headstone shape.
The Harris monument, slightly to the south-east, has a curved pyramidal cap with a plain finial on a flat top with an incised edge. It features a tall moulded plinth on a base that is also breaking up. The ends are indented with a fluted frieze and rosette, and twisted astragal. The east side has a ribbon and plain oval, while the west side has an oval with palm leaves, and larger ovals on the sides.
