Description

Lake Mill and attached outbuildings at Longfords Mills (Building Nos 22, 22A, 23, 24, 25 and 26)

Mill building with attached outbuilding range, dating from 1806. The structure is built of coursed rubble limestone with concrete tile and diagonal asbestos roofs; stone slate covers the outbuildings. The main building is four storeys high with attached lower wings—a 2-storey wing to the west end and a 4-storey wing with attic to the east. A single-storey outbuilding range forms an L-plan to the north-east.

The south elevation features 7-window fenestration to the central block, all with segmental arches and fixed lights. The central round-arched doorway has been altered to a window. The flanking wings have segmental-arched casements, some with leaded lights. The east end has 2-window segmental-arched casement fenestration. The west end contains a small niche at attic level in the gable end housing a bell, probably the bell inscribed "Dame Alys Hamton, A°M V X", said to have been cast in 1515 and dedicated to a benefactress of Minchinhampton, installed by William Playne in 1806. The north side displays segmental-arched fenestration matching the south elevation, with later additions of no special interest. The attached outbuilding range has a segmental-arched doorway in the north gable end with a lunette window above.

The building was constructed after completion of a large dam creating Gatcombe Water and was positioned out of the direct line of flow should the dam burst. The interior was not inspected.
