Description

This is a mill building located approximately 50 metres north east of Lake Mill at Longfords Mill. The original core of the building dates to the late 18th century, with an early 19th century addition. It is constructed of coursed rubble limestone, with an ashlar chimney on the south gable, and roofs of stone slate and concrete tile. The building is three storeys high, with nine bays, and includes a two-bay wide addition to the centre of the east side. The east side features nine segmental-arched openings to the ground floor, some of which are now blocked, with later raking buttresses. Above, there are four wide segmental-arched casements to each floor, with the inner two partially obscured by the addition. The projecting addition incorporates a segmental-arched throughway and a mixture of casement windows. The south gable has two attic fixed-lights and a small chimney above. The north gable has two large fixed-light windows to the upper floor, with a timber lintel, and a loft fixed-light above. An attached 20th-century building on the west side is not of special interest. The mill was originally powered by water from a nearby stream until the construction of the Gatcombe Water in 1806, and was likely used as a corn mill from 1808, although it was originally built as a cloth mill.
