Description
The Loveday and unidentified monuments are located approximately 5 meters east of the east chancel wall in the churchyard of the Church of St Mary. The first monument is a chest tomb from the early 17th century, made of limestone. It is a long, low structure that has become much worn over time. The tomb features a flat table with a moulded edge, panels at the pilaster corners adorned with raised rosettes, and a moulded flared base. There are remnants of an inscription in capital lettering, but it is no longer legible. Historical records from a churchyard survey in 1879 indicate that this tomb belonged to William Loveday, Yeoman, from 1623, making it likely the oldest surviving chest tomb in the churchyard. The Loveday family held significance in Painswick during the 17th and 18th centuries.
The second monument is a headstone located about 4 meters north of the chest tomb. It has a cambered head and features an urn and floral drops, along with a raised panel with a moulded edge. The inscription on this headstone is not legible.
