Description
The barn located about 60 metres south-east of Painswick Lodge is a small structure that likely dates from the late 18th century, although it incorporates earlier work, with the lower barn reputedly built in 1721. The main barn features well-cut squared limestone and has a steeply pitched stone slate roof with coped gables. The lower barn is constructed of cut stone and has a corrugated iron roof placed over thatch.
A deep gabled porch with later doors is found on the north side of the main barn. The south side includes two 4-centred openings, which may be re-used 16th-century work; the right opening is blocked, while there is a central flush opening for large doors. Inside, the main barn has five bays with collar and tie beams, two trenched purlins, and deep slits. There is a half-height wall and a rough ceiling in part of the barn.
The lower barn features various openings, including doors on the east and north sides. It also has five bays with light collar and tie beams, two rough purlins, and some light wind bracing. The beams in the lower barn are set at right angles to those in the principal barn.
