Description
The Minchin monument is a pedestal tomb located in the churchyard, approximately 5 meters north of the Wells monument and to the east of the Church of St. James. It dates from 1756 and is made of limestone. The tomb is tall and rectangular, featuring bow-ends and gadrooned corner balusters. Each end has a recessed beaded panel, with five cherub's heads arranged around a sun-burst on the west side and a military trophy with a central open book on the east side. The side panels have cartouches in recessed moulding, with two cherub's heads under a shroud on the south side. The top is hollow moulded, and it sits on a cyma moulded plinth. Although the inscriptions are illegible, the decoration is richly modeled. It is recorded as being inscribed to Christopher Minchin, who died in 1756.
