Description

Wotton House is a large house that now serves as a nurses' home. It was built for Thomas Horton in the early 18th century and is depicted in an engraving by Kip dated 1712. The building has undergone alterations and extensions in the mid-19th and 20th centuries. It is constructed of brick laid in English bond with stone details, featuring a hipped slate roof with gabled dormers and tall brick stacks. The house has a double-depth symmetrical block with a central bow at the rear, a canted bay added to the front on the left in the 19th century, and early 20th-century additions at both ends.

The main block is two storeys and an attic, with a symmetrical front of seven bays that has been altered by the addition of the canted bay, which replaces the first and second windows from the left on the ground floor. The exterior includes a brick offset plinth, a raised brick band at the first-floor level, and a timber crowning modillion cornice, with raised and chamfered quoins at the corners. The central bay features an entrance doorway framed by a shallow stone porch supported by two fluted Corinthian columns. This porch has a richly moulded entablature with dosserets at either end and in the centre, along with a segmental pediment above. The entrance includes a fielded six-panel door. The ground and first floors have sashes with glazing bars (3x4 panes) in flush timber frames, set in openings with rubbed brick flat-arches and projecting stone sills. The dormers have double casements, and the canted bay features a stone sill band, a crowning stone band, and a plain sash in each facet. The interior has not been inspected.
