Description

The Old House is a farmhouse, now a house, that dates from the late 16th century or early 17th century and was significantly remodeled and extended in the 18th century, with minor alterations in the 19th and 20th centuries. The building features a timber frame, mostly covered by later extensions, with stuccoed brick, hipped and gabled plain tile roofs, and brick stacks. The original structure was likely a lateral range with a cross-wing on the front right. In the 18th century, a lateral range was added to the front of the cross-wing, along with a wing at the rear.

The exterior is two storeys high. On the left side of the front range and the cross-wing, the roof slope continues as a catslide to the first-floor level, which features a dormer with a raking roof. The front has a central, single-storey, gabled entrance porch added in the early 20th century. To the right is a bay window with a lean-to roof and casements, while to the left is a three-light timber casement. On the first floor, there are three two-light leaded casements.

On the left side, at the angle with the lateral range, there is a 20th-century single-storey, timber-framed conservatory porch. The left gable wall of the lateral range has timber framing underbuilt in brick on the ground floor. The first floor features timber framing of close studs between the bottom plate and intermediate rails in two zones. The narrow zone above, under the tie beam, may indicate a later heightening and re-roofing of the range, using a different pattern of close studs in the upper zone and in the gable. In the middle zone, there are ogee tension braces at each corner post and a collar tie in the gable. The ground floor has a central two-light casement and a single-light casement to the right, while the first floor has a three-light casement, all with 20th-century leadlight glazing. The interior has not been inspected but is likely to be of interest.
