Description

Collingwood House is a house built around 1835, constructed of red brick with stone details, featuring a hipped slate roof and brick stacks. The building has a double-depth layout with a large wing extending to the left of the main block.

The exterior is two storeys high with a symmetrical front that has three bays. It includes an offset plinth, a raised stone band at the first-floor level, wide boxed eaves, and stone quoins at the outer corners. The central entrance doorway is framed by stone Ionic half-columns and an entablature with a blocking course. The doorway itself has a four-panel door with timber-framed, narrow sidelights and a plain rectangular fanlight above. On either side of the entrance are stone-framed, two-light windows featuring moulded architraves, a central mullion, and projecting sills supported by three shaped brackets, with casements in each light. The first floor has three sash windows with central vertical glazing bars, set in stone-framed openings with moulded architraves and projecting sills on two shaped brackets. The south elevation also has windows with similar details.

The interior has not been inspected. The front garden forecourt is enclosed by quadrant wing walls that extend from the corners of the block and end in piers, which were formerly connected by a wrought-iron fence. Historically, this house served as the residence of the Governor of the Horton Road Hospital. It is included for its historic interest and as a complete example of its type and date.
