Description
13 and 15 Stroud Road are two houses that may have originally been one house, now used as offices. They date from the early 19th century, with some alterations in the 20th century. The buildings are finished in painted stucco on brick and have slate roofs.
The structure is a large block featuring a full-height recessed bay on the right side that contains the entrance. To the right of this bay, there is a lower wing that projects forward. The front of the block is three storeys high. To the left of the recessed bay, there is a central semicircular bow that spans the two lower storeys. On the upper floors, at the outer corners and flanking each side of the bow, there are slender pilasters in a giant order, which have moulded bases supported on shaped brackets and thin moulded capitals. Between the bases, there is a raised band and a crowning entablature with a coped parapet.
In the bow, each floor features a central sash window and narrow side sashes, all of which are curved and have glazing bars (with 3x4 panes in the front sashes and 2x4 panes in the side sashes). These windows are framed by slender, attached shafts with moulded bases and capitals, along with projecting sills. Above the bow on the second floor, there is a tripartite window with sashes, where the central sash has a vertical glazing bar.
In the recessed bay to the right, there is a flight of stone steps leading to the entrance doorway, which features a fanlight and sidelights framed by pilasters and an entablature above. The entrance has a 20th-century glazed panel door. Above the doorway on the first floor, there is a sash window with glazing bars (2x4 panes), and on the second floor, there is a shorter sash with glazing bars in the upper frame.
On the ground floor of the front of the wing to the right, there is a large opening with 20th-century garage doors. A raised string course marks the first-floor sill level. On the first floor, in two shallow semicircular arched recesses, there are sashes with glazing bars (3x4 panes), and on the second floor, there are two sashes with glazing bars (3x3 panes) in openings with projecting sills. The interior has not been inspected.
