Description
The Cam monument is a wide pedestal tomb located in the churchyard, about 1 metre east of the east wall of the chancel at the Church of St. Mary. It dates from the mid-18th century and commemorates members of the Cam family. The tomb is square in plan and features an urn on top with four swags, resting on a circular cavetto stand that sits on a square base. The base has roll moulding and gadrooning beneath it. The top is wide and swept, adorned with a wreath, a serpent of eternity enclosing an hourglass, a ring, and crossed laurel fronds, all in relief on each face. The sides taper downwards and frame slate panels intended for inscriptions. The monument has a moulded base and two steps, with the lower part originally having iron railings. It commemorates J. Camm, who died in 1753, W. Cam, who died in 1767, and includes a list of earlier burials as well as later ones up to 1880.
