Description
The Gibbs monument is a pedestal tomb located in the churchyard, approximately 9 metres south of the priest's door in the chancel of the Church of St Mary. It commemorates Thomas Gibbs, who died in 1807. The tomb is made of stone and features a small pyramid top with a gadrooned edge, a cavetto, and two steps leading to the lid with a moulded edge. The fluted frieze includes corner and centre paterae, and the sides have a rectangular frame with an oval panel for lettering, complemented by thin, stylized foliage in the corners. The plinth has a moulded top and a square base. The lettering is well-executed, using a mix of upper and lower case, with scrolls embellishing the first word. There are later inscriptions added in 1841.
