Description

This is a former farmhouse, now a house, dating to the 17th century or earlier, with an enlargement in the late 17th century. It was altered in the 19th century and restored around 1965. The house is constructed of brick-nogged timber framing, with a stone plinth in part, and has a tiled roof. A brick lean-to addition is at the rear. The building has a “T” plan, with each section of the plan being three bays, including a two-storey section and attics.

The front facade features mullion and transom windows with weatherboarding, except for the attic windows and an area in front of the front door. A projecting gable, timber-framed and close-studded, is on the left, with a three-light window. The main block has wider-spaced studs. A boarded door, raised two stone steps in an internal corner, leads to the house, with a two-light window alongside. These are sheltered by a lean-to porch supported by timber posts (added around 1965). To the right are a two-light and a four-light window. A single-storey brick wing projects from the right end, containing a three-light window on its left return; a cut-down chimney is on its gable.

On the first floor, a three-light window is on the left gable, which cuts through an original tie beam. A later timber-framed gable was added above to raise the eaves slightly for the cross wing; the principals have curved feet. A four-pane casement is fitted into the top of the gable, also with weatherboarding. To the right are two two-light and one four-light windows. A plain panel in the framing above accommodates an attic. Two three-light dormers with flat roofs were added around 1965.

The right return has a large, plain external brick chimney. The left return has a large external rendered chimney breast with a star-plan brick stack.

Internally, the trusses have slightly-curved collars, and the lower principals are duplicated with curved feet. There is a square ridge in the cross wing; the ridge is not visible in the main wing. An original boarded door is present in the attics. The stairs, most doors, and opening casements were renewed around 1965.
