Description

CIVIL PARISH OF WESTBURY ON SEVERN

11/282

SO 71 SW RODLEY Fish House at II Heald Farm

Draft net fish house. Late C18 or early C19. Red brick in irregular bond, some of the stack extensions not bonded in to main structure, part sandstone rubble plinth, plain tile roof. A small rectangular building with simple gabled ends, and a loft floor; at the west end is an external gable stack rising from a broad base through offsets, probably added to the original fabric. South front has an upper opening now blocked in brick and a central opening, lintel or arch broken out, without door; east end has a small 2-light casement in wood at loft level, and north front a central door to cambered head. Interior has cobbled ground floor, iron stair to loft floor, and five ooenings at both levels. A modest building, but one of few remaining evidences of the former salmon fishing industry on the Severn and thus of historical interest. Similar houses also at Newnham (qv) and Minsterworth, in both cases between the A48 and the river. It is said that lofts were occupied by the fishermen, who had to work at all hours to take advantage of the river's tides.
