Description

The stables, located about 46 meters south of Pauntley Court, date from the late 16th or 17th century and were likely re-erected later. They feature brick-nogged timber-framing, with two panels high per floor, set on a stone plinth, and have a tiled roof. The building consists of five bays and was originally two storeys throughout. The framing is morticed for close studding, although alternate studs are missing except for those adjoining some main posts at the rear.

On the side facing the dovecote, there is a wide opening on the left, with a separate lintel below the bressumer that fills most of the bay. To the right of the second bay, two upper infill panels are missing, leading to an opening on the right. There is a boarded door on the right under trimming that supports a main post, and a hit-and-miss window to the right of that. The bressumer is morticed for joists for a missing wing.

On the first floor, there are two boarded doors on the left and one on the right, with a gap in the framing over the boarded door to the ground floor. The roof is hipped on the right. Internally, there is a brick cross wall at the left end, with the remainder divided on the right of the boarded door to form two stables. The upper floor has collapsed in the right two bays, along with one roof truss. The first floor is divided into three sections with timber-framed partitions and part wattle and daub infill. The trusses consist of a tie-beam, collar, and angle struts, with a central stud over the partitions where closed, and there are two pairs of purlins with a square ridge. This structure may be part of the house, re-erected in the 18th or early 19th century.
