Description

Murrell's End Farmhouse is a former farmhouse, now a house, dating from the early 18th century, with a rear wing that may be older and early 19th-century alterations. The building features painted Flemish bond brickwork on the left side of the front and English bond on the right, with a stone plinth and rough wet dash render on the rear wing, topped with tiled roofs. The front has seven windows and is one room deep, with a rear wing set at right angles, offset from the center, and a stair turret in the angle on the right, along with a lean-to behind.

The house is two-and-a-half storeys high, with a central front door that has six panels—two fielded at the bottom and four glazed at the top—surmounted by a semi-circular fanlight with radiating bars. There are attached Doric columns on either side of the door, with an impost block and open pediment above. The brickwork changes just to the right of the door. On either side of the entrance, there are three tall, 18-pane sash windows with cambered, rubbed brick arches. The end windows were altered in the mid-20th century, replacing dummy windows. A moulded brick string course runs along the first floor, stopping short of the corners. Above, in the center, is a 24-pane sash window, flanked by two 18-pane windows on each side, with blind openings at the ends. The gable features dentil eaves and a large square chimney on the ridge of the right gable, with a smaller chimney one room in from the left end. A string course runs across the bottom and partway up the gable on the left side.

Inside, the ground floor features fielded panelled shutters at the front, an entrance hall, six-panel doors, and fluted surrounds with lion-head corner paterae. The fireplace has an eared surround, and there are H hinges on the fielded-panelled cupboard doors to the left. The dogleg stairs have turned balusters, a moulded string, and handrail. Panelled doors lead to cupboards in the room on the right, which have shaped fronts to the shelves and semi-circular heads. The room at the right end has a wide fireplace with an elliptical brick arch. The house was built in at least three stages, with the last two possibly involving the rebuilding of an earlier house. The stairs in the turret have been removed.
