Description
The Hobbs monument is a chest tomb located in the churchyard about 11 metres south of the south porch of the Church of St. Ethelbert. This late 18th-century stone tomb features a flat lid with a moulded edge. The sides and ends have fielded panels framed by a narrow border, and the corners are adorned with quarter-square balusters that are deeply recessed on the stem. The monument stands on a plain moulded base. The inscriptions on the tomb are weathering badly, but one end clearly shows that the earliest inscription is for Maria, daughter of Thomas Hobbs, who died in 1772, with the latest inscription dating to 1844.
