Description

The east pair of a range of cottages dates from around the 16th century and was remodelled in the 18th and 19th centuries. It is built of rendered stone with a slate roof and has gable-end and side stacks. The house originally had a three-room plan, with the hall open to the roof—the low east end was probably not open—and the inner western room having a chamber above. A floor was inserted into the hall, and the eaves were raised at the front, converting the building into two separate cottages in the 18th or 19th century. One cottage occupies the original hall and low end, while the other occupies the inner room, chamber, and later rear outshut.

The south front has an asymmetrical three-window façade. The ground floor has small two-light casement windows with glazing bars, and a fixed light window on the right. A plank door is located on the left. A doorway is in the right-hand gable end. The rear (north) elevation includes casement windows, and an outshut with a corrugated asbestos lean-to roof on the right.

The eastern room has two chamfered cross-beams, one with diagonal stops, and a large fireplace with a plain wooden chimneypiece and a 20th-century range. The central room features a chamfered cross-beam stopped at intervals. The western room, now a separate cottage, has a chamfered axial beam, a 19th-century fireplace and range in the stack with winder stairs to the side, and a small grate in the chamber above. An outshut contains a 19th-century boiler. The roof has tie-beam trusses with trenched purlins and common-rafters, showing smoke-blackening over the centre bay.
