Description
The Shop is a house, likely built in the early 17th century. It features roughcast over rubble with a slate roof and brick stacks. The building has a two-unit plan with a through passage to the left of an axial stack, and a service area is located to the left of the passage. It is one storey with an attic and has a two-window range, along with a single-storey service room to the left. The doors and windows are from the 20th century, including two gabled dormers on the front above a three-light casement. There is also a 20th-century lean-to at the rear.
Inside, the service room contains a chamfered beam with end mortices for timber studs, and the outer walls are from the 19th century, suggesting that this part of the house may have originally been timber-framed. The through passage has a stone flag floor. There is a chamfered head on the inner face of the lintel leading from the passage to the main room, and the winder stairs mostly retain 17th-century fabric. The building features chamfered beams with diagonal stops, and the beam separating the main room from the right-hand room has stud holes for a partition. The roof is three bays with a blocked area above collar level, featuring two tiers of face-halved trenched purlins. The truss to the left, positioned centrally over the main room, has chamfered inner principals and a collar with arch bracing leading to a nailed chamfered centre piece. This house is notable for its period features, including late arch bracing and an unusual plan form.
