Description
The Keynton monument and enclosure is located in the churchyard about 3.5 meters east of the chancel of the Church of St. Ethelbert. This Grade II listed chest tomb dates from 1763 and is dedicated to Mary Keynton, the widow of Samuel Keynton, a London merchant. The tomb features a flat lid with a vertical tooled edge and a moulding below. The sides are made of fielded panels designed for inscriptions, with a tooled margin and lyre ends, while the ends are plain. Surrounding the tomb is a wrought-iron railing with square corner posts that have moulded bases and urn finials. The bars of the railing are set diagonally and topped with tapered finials. The monument also commemorates George Skipp, who died in 1783, and is noted for its good Roman lettering.
