Description

The cowhouse and shelter shed at Callow Farm is a structure that includes a cowhouse, shelter shed, and store. The store dates from the 17th century and underwent significant alterations in the 19th century, with the remainder built in the third quarter of the 19th century for the Beauchamp Estate. It features brick walls and brick-nogged timber framing in part of the store, topped with tiled roofs.

The building is arranged in an L shape and is single storey, with the main ranges consisting of nine bays and a three-bay lofted return at one end. The cowhouse range has a boarded door leading to a feeding passage at the rear and a shuttered window in the center, both set within cambered brick arches, with a datestone from 1861 located centrally.

In the yard, there is a brick return on the right side with a three-bay front, supported by timber posts at the ends and in the bays, featuring curved braces to the wall plate. The center post has been infilled, and there are boarded doors that extend to within 600mm of the eaves. To the left, there are two brick-walled bays with a center boarded door and a cambered brick arch. Further to the left is another three-bay cowhouse and a single-bay brick front with a door, both designed similarly.

Adjacent to this is a seven-bay open-fronted shed for loose cattle, which retains the posts and braces similar to the first cowhouse, remaining open at the front. At the left end, there is a two-bay brick-walled box and a passage across the building with a door at the rear. The return section is part timber-framed and part brick, featuring external stairs leading to the loft.

Internally, both ranges have king-post trusses secured with iron bolts, one pair of purlins, and a plank ridge. There are boarded doors from a central feed preparation room to the front of the cowhouses on both sides, with openings leading to the feeding passage at the rear. The left cowhouse retains part of a brick trough and paving, along with an iron water trough and pipe located in the loose box at the end. There is a door from the corner room to the feeding passage, and double doors at the front of the open shed leading to the rear for root storage. Internal buttresses are present at the bay divisions in the shelter shed, which is slightly later in date than the cowhouse. This building forms a group with the house and barn, completing the yard enclosure with the latter.
