Description
This is a very large, unidentified headstone located in the churchyard about 19.5 meters south of the east end of the nave at the Church of St. Ethelbert. It is probably from around 1800 and made of stone. The headstone stands approximately 2.3 meters high and is 120 millimeters thick. It has a shaped top that is slightly thicker than the main part, with rounded shoulders leading to a slight step that sweeps up to a short, flat central area. The bottom of the top section has a beaded edge, and the main body features beading on the corners and is divided into thirds vertically on both sides with beading.
On the west face, there is an inset panel with a cambered head and beaded edge, which displays a high relief carving of a child dressed in contemporary attire, surrounded by leaf scrolls at the back and front. The carving is of good quality, although the inscriptions are largely weathered, with the text 'Suffer little children to come unto me.....' still partially legible around the top. This headstone is part of a close group with the Wooley and Wood monuments.
