Description
The Mountjoy monument is a pedestal tomb located in the churchyard, about 21.5 meters south of the east end of the chancel at the Church of St. Ethelbert. This early 19th-century monument is made of ashlar stone. It features a flat lid with a moulded edge and a short step above it, along with a small cavetto moulding and corners that are cut away square. The design includes a square dome with reeded sides that fan out from a small apex pyramid. Below the lid, there is a fluted frieze, and the sides have recessed corners with square-edged raised oval panels intended for lettering, adorned with carved leaves and fruit in the upper spandrels. The plinth has a moulded top, and the entire structure is set on a wide square stone base. It commemorates Anthony Mountjoy, who died in 1808, and includes one illegible inscription along with another for a person who died in 1813.
