Description
This listing describes a group of three 18th-century chest tombs located in the churchyard, about 3 meters south-southeast of the porch of the Church of St. Mary in Kempley.
The first tomb commemorates James Gurney, who died in 1743, and Jane Gurney, who died in 1735. It features a flat lid with a moulded edge and lyre ends, while the sides have a central panel adorned with low relief scrolls. The tomb has a moulded base.
The second tomb is for Henry Mathew, who died in 1725. It also has a flat lid with a moulded edge, wide pilaster ends, and includes rococo carving on the stem and its returns, as well as on the sides. This tomb also has a moulded base.
The southernmost tomb has an illegible inscription on the north side and is dedicated to Henry Mathew, who died in 1776. It features a flat lid with a moulded edge, corner quarter-rectangular fluted balusters with acanthus-leaf carving, and rococo decoration on the ends and sides, which include heads at the top centre of the sides. This tomb also has a moulded base.
