Description
This building is an outbuilding located approximately 3 meters west of The White House. It was originally used as stables and a cider house, dating from the late 16th century to early 17th century, with remodels and extensions occurring in the late 17th century and mid 18th century. The rear wall features a late 16th century to early 17th century timber frame, while the left extension is made of late 17th century random bond brick and mid 18th century Flemish bond brick. The roof is gabled and covered with plain tiles.
The structure is a single storey with a five-window range. On the left side, there are segmental brick arches over the windows, one of which is blocked, alongside a mid 20th century inserted entry. There is another mid 20th century entry to the right, with 18th century segmental brick arches over two windows and an 18th century plank door. A 20th century window is present, with a timber lintel above a double entry on the right.
Inside, the stables on the left contain three 19th century stalls, a cobbled floor, chamfered beams, and a 3-bay post and pad roof with tenoned purlins. There are four late 16th century to early 17th century queen-post and queen-strut trusses with trenched purlins and wattle and daub infill. A late 17th century brick wall divides the right-hand bay. Additionally, there are two 17th century to 18th century stone vats, likely used for cider making.
