Description
The Crawshay Tomb and railed enclosure is a chest tomb located in the churchyard about 28 meters north of the west end of the Church of St. John the Evangelist. It dates from the mid-19th century and features a marble tomb with cast iron railings set on a stone plinth. The chest has a weathered top that projects over the sides and is adorned with clasping pilasters at the corners. Each face of the tomb includes trefoil head lancets, and between the panels with arched tops are decorative foliage in the spandrels. The tomb rests on a moulded plinth above a plain base. The railings consist of bars with alternate pairs linked by lancets below the top rail, topped with octagonal finials. The corner piers are open and square, each with central finials. This tomb commemorates five of Henry Crawshay's children, with the earliest death recorded in 1842 and the latest in 1863.
