Description
The Adams monument is a headstone located in the churchyard about 9 metres south of the west face of the tower of the Church of St. Ethelbert. It commemorates John Adams, who died in 1686. The stone features a shaped head with a central depiction of a head, flanked by scrolls on either side. The top is hollow and connects to plain circles at the corners. Below, there are stylised flowers at each end, along with flourishes and another head in the centre, which has wings rising to frame the lower half of the head above. The centre of the monument is recessed for lettering, with a moulded margin on the sides. This is the oldest surviving dateable monument in the churchyard.
