Description
The Tingle monument is a pedestal tomb located in the churchyard about 26.5 meters south of the chancel of the Church of St. Ethelbert. It dates from the early 19th century and is made of ashlar stone. The lid features a moulded edge and is set above a step that is recessed from the edge. It has cavetto moulding that rises to a square central piece topped with a hollow pyramid. Below this is a reeded frieze that extends around the corners. The sides of the tomb have recessed fielded panels framed with cyma moulding. The corners are adorned with elongated quarter-square balusters, which have leaf capitals and bulbous sections decorated with leaf motifs, resembling gadrooning. The monument has a moulded plinth and rests on a flat, square stone base that once supported railings. It commemorates William Tingle, who died in 1820, and Elizabeth, the wife of J. Teague, though her year of death is illegible.
