Description
The Broben monument is a chest tomb located in the churchyard about 18 meters south of the east end of the chancel of the Church of St. Ethelbert. It commemorates Broben, who died in 1767. The tomb is made of stone and features a flat lid with a moulded projecting edge. The sides have fielded panels for inscriptions, while the ends are designed with enlarged rectangular balusters topped with fluted capitals. The main 'stem' of the tomb includes a raised circle with sprays of leaves that emerge from the top and sweep down each side, all surrounding a foliate urn. The main inscription has weathered over time, and there are later inscriptions from the early 19th century.
