Description

The Manor is a manor house, dating from the 16th century, with substantial alterations in the early 18th century and a 20th-century extension dated 1919. It is constructed of coursed squared and dressed limestone, with an ashlar facade to the 18th-century range. The roof is stone slate, with ashlar stacks. The building follows a basic ‘L’ shape, with the 18th-century range projecting to the right of the original 16th-century range, and a 20th-century extension at the gable end of the 18th-century range.

The 16th-century range is of 1½ storeys and features a flat-chamfered plinth. It has a three-light hollow-chamfered stone-mullioned casement with a transom and stopped hood to the left of a projecting, gabled 20th-century porch. A three-light stone-mullioned casement with round-headed lights and carved spandrels, along with a two-light stone-mullioned casement above, are also present. A 20th-century plank door is set within a flat-chamfered basket-headed surround, also with a stopped hood. Reused carved stone above the doorway is decorated with a bird perched on a bowl and bears a heraldic shield displaying the arms of the Hungerford family, dated 1570 – likely reused from Hungerford Chapel in the nearby Church of St Peter. An additional heraldic shield, decorated with a wheatsheaf, is located to the left of the porch. All the carved stone probably represents reused elements. A two-storey, stone-mullioned canted bay, dated 1919, is at the left gable end, featuring rusticated quoins. The 18th-century range has two storeys and an attic, lit by a hipped, two-light roof dormer. Stone-mullioned cross windows, within double-chamfered surrounds, are present on the ground and first floors. A former doorway on the ground floor has been replaced with a window. A three-light stone-mullioned casement is located to the ground floor right. A dripmould runs over the ground floor windows. The right-hand bay is partly obscured by a 19th-century extension which runs at a right angle to the right. A 20th-century three-light stone-mullioned casement is set within the gable end. Tall, two-light stone-mullioned casements are found at the rear of the 18th-century range. The gable ends have saddleback moulded and flat coping.

The interior of the 16th-century range features a 19th-century stone fireplace with a basket-headed surround, carved spandrels and moulded stops in the hall, with seven quatrefoils above, which are likely restored. Carved heads and flowers, resembling debased ballflower, are present at the centre of each quatrefoil. A tie beam has stepped stops and deep flat chamfers. A fireplace in an adjacent room has ornate flower and fruit decoration and egg and dart moulding. A short length of 17th-century balustrade with splat balusters, probably representing a reused remnant of the original staircase, is present, while the current staircase dates to the 19th century with turned balusters. Roof trusses have arch-braced roof trusses. A possibly 18th-century fireplace with fluted decoration and a decorated frieze is also present. The 18th-century range contains a stone fireplace with bolection moulding.
