Description

Cheltenham Lodges, including gates, gate piers, and adjoining walls, are a pair of mid-19th century lodges located at Sherborne House. Constructed from ashlar stone with alternating ashlar and vermiculated quoins, they feature slate roofs and ashlar stacks. The lodges are rectangular in shape and are positioned on either side of wrought and cast-iron gates. The entrance spans approximately 50 meters, with walls that curve away from the lodges.

Each lodge is a single storey with a symmetrical facade that has three windows, topped by a triangular pediment over the central bay, which slightly projects forward. The windows are twelve-pane sashes, with the central bay featuring sash lighting set within a surround of alternating vermiculated and ashlar quoins. The side sashes are framed by moulded and lugged architraves, and there is a moulded cornice above.

Entrances are located on the returns facing the gateway, consisting of six-panel doors within shallow stone porches that also have triangular pediments and pyramidal roofs with stacks at the apex. The simple wrought-iron gates are set within moulded and lugged surrounds that connect the lodges to the gate piers.

The rectangular gate piers have alternate vermiculated and ashlar quoins and feature shell alcoves on both sides. They are capped with moulded tops and large ball finials, set on square vermiculated plinths. The double wrought-iron gates display scrollwork decoration, and the wrought iron overthrow incorporates the Sherborne Arms. The ramped walls on either side rise to about 2-3 meters in height, curving away and terminating in smaller piers similar to the main gate piers but without shell alcoves.
