Description

The Lower Swell War Memorial stands on a small green in the village centre. It was erected in memory of those who died in the Great Wars and subsequent conflicts, specifically the First World War (1914-1918), Second World War (1939-1945), and the years 1914-1919. The memorial consists of a bulbous urn topped by a flame, set upon a square limestone ashlar pedestal which stands on a shallow base of three steps. Inscriptions appear on each face of the pedestal. The south-west face reads "IN MEMORY/ OF/ THE MEN OF/ NETHER SWELL/ WHO/ GAVE THEIR LIVES/ IN THE GREAT WARS". The south-east and north-west faces display the years MCM/ XIV/ MCM/ XIX/ MCMXXXIX/ MCMXLV (1914/1919/1939/1945). The north-east face lists names.
