Description
The gatepiers and gates at Ampney Park, along with the adjoining curved wall, were likely built in the late 19th century. They consist of a pair of square gatepiers made of ashlar stone, set on a plinth with three projecting plain bands—one at the base and two below a wide moulded cornice. Each pier rises to a stepped cap topped with a large ball finial, reaching a total height of about 5 meters.
The wall is constructed from coursed and dressed stone, featuring moulded coping that curves forward for about 4 meters on both sides. It sweeps down after approximately 1.5 meters and concludes with a third identical pier on the right-hand end. On the left side, there is a small additional gateway with chamfered and stopped jambs and a moulded cornice. To the far left, on the return of the wall, there are two square openings with similar surrounds.
Wrought-iron gates are present at both gateways, along with grilles for the openings, all designed with matching scrollwork. The large main gates feature an additional decorative section across the top, adorned with an acanthus leaf motif.
