Description
Bachelors Court is a former farmhouse that has been converted into a house, dating from the early 18th century. It is constructed of rubble stone and features a Cotswold stone-slate roof. The main part of the building is set back from the pathway and has an additional contemporary wing on the left, creating an L-shape. The main range includes a large stone gable stack on the right and a smaller brick gable stack on the left, with a steeply pitched blind central gable.
There are two windows with two-light wooden casements that have lead lights. On the ground floor, there is a two-light window to the left, a three-light window to the right, and a central gabled porch built in 1840 that has a chamfered four-centred arched doorway. Inside, the property features some plasterwork and woodwork by Ernest Gimson. The left-hand room on the ground floor contains a polygonal oak corner cupboard with a wooden carved panel and an inset date of 1915, along with small animal figures in a plaster frieze above and over the doorway to the left. The fireplace in the right-hand room on the first floor has small plaster motifs with a date of 1913 and entwined initials MJ.
The two-storey wing to the left has a central brick stack and a lobby entry with a newel stair over the fireplace, along with four windows similar to those in the main range. This cottage was occupied for many years by Norman Jewson, a pupil of Ernest Gimson, who moved to Sapperton shortly after Gimson and the Barnsley brothers. It remained occupied until 1984 by his daughter, Nancy.
