Description
Windrush House, formerly known as The Vicarage, is a former vicarage that has been converted into a house. It dates from the late 18th century, possibly built on the site of an earlier house, and was extended around 1822 by a member of the Dutton family. The building is constructed of ashlar stone and features a stone slate roof with ashlar stacks. It has a 'T'-shaped plan with an early 19th-century extension to the left of the rear range.
The main structure is two storeys high with an attic and has a symmetrical facade with three windows, reflecting late 18th to early 19th-century design. The first floor has twelve-pane sash windows, while the ground floor features tripartite sashes with glazing bars. There are three gabled roof dormers with hung slate on the returns. The central entrance consists of a six-panel door with two upper glazed panels set within a round-headed surround that includes a fanlight. An open-sided porch with a triangular pediment is supported by slender Doric columns.
To the left-hand return, there are two two-light stone-mullioned casements with leaded panes, along with two double-chamfered stone-mullioned surrounds with stopped hoods that light the basement. The upper floors contain two twelve-pane sashes and one eight-pane sash. At the rear, there is a canted three-storey bay with fifteen-pane sashes on the first floor and possibly original twelve-pane sashes on the second floor. The gable ends feature flat coping and gable-end stacks.
Inside, there is a late 18th to early 19th-century staircase with stick balusters and treads that have bracket decoration, although there has been limited inspection of the interior.
