Description

Redesdale Hall, also known as the Town Hall, was built in 1887 and designed by architect Sir Ernest George for Lord Redesdale of Batsford Park. It is an early example of the free Tudor style and features two storeys constructed from golden, ashlar quality rubble. The building has six bays and is topped with a Cotswold stone roof that includes coped verges, finials, and footstones, along with moulded eaves.

The roof is notable for two asymmetrical elements: a clock turret with pinnacles and crown bracing on the ridge, and a tall crenellated lateral stack that rises from a gable over a sundial on the east front. The structure is divided into two parts; the southern section has three centred arches on the ground floor, with four openings to the east and two to the south, some of which are blocked and contain three-light mullion windows, with one open at the southern end. The northern section has a more domestic appearance, featuring two-light Tudor-head windows.

On the first floor, there are three similar four-light windows across the east front and two tall two-light windows with two transoms on the south gable. The Redesdale arms are displayed in a carved panel on the south side. The north and west fronts are similar in design, and the building includes a crested gutter and lead rainwater heads.

Inside, the ground floor is divided by posts for each bay, and there is an arcaded staircase with turned balusters in the south-west corner. The first-floor room consists of six bays with arch-braced trusses and a crested wall-plate supporting an open ceiling. A French Renaissance-style corbelled fireplace features radiused corners and a carved panel displaying the Redesdale arms. The south side includes a gallery, a panelled dado, and armorial glass.
