Description

38 and 40 Coxwell Street are two houses, along with No. 65 Thomas Street, built in 1882 for the Bathurst estate. The buildings are constructed from coursed limestone rubble with ashlar dressings and feature a Welsh slate roof. There are two diagonally-set stone flues on a corbelled-out stack at the left end, and a ridge stack in the center that has been rebuilt in reconstituted stone. The design is in the Cotswold style, with three gables on the front and an L-shaped plan on a corner site with Thomas Street. The houses are single storey with an attic and have a two-window range.

On the ground floor, there are two three-light chamfered stone mullion-and-transom windows with leaded top lights. Above, in the gables, are three similar two- and three-light chamfered stone-mullion windows with leaded lights. The entrance features two boarded doors set in chamfered stone surrounds with four-centred arched heads, located at the center and right. These doors are adorned with matching 19th-century iron knockers, escutcheons, and decorated hinges. The gables have moulded stone coping, and the left end gable includes stone blocks with moulded coping on the kneelers and apex. A shallow plinth and a moulded string course run over the ground floor. The rounded corner beneath the corbelled-out stack at the left end adds to the architectural interest. The facade is further enhanced by three square-section moulded 19th-century cast-iron rainwater pipes. The front facing Thomas Street is similar in design. The interiors have not been inspected.
