Description

Nos. 2 and 2A Cecily Hill is a house that has been converted into a flat and maisonette. It dates from the late 17th century to early 18th century and has undergone later alterations. The building is constructed of coursed squared limestone rubble, with some remnants of old limewash, and features a stone slate roof. It has brick and rendered stacks at both ends.

The structure is two storeys high with an attic and has a five-window range. There are five 6/6-pane sash windows in chamfered stone surrounds, with mullions and transoms removed on the first floor, and three similar windows on the ground floor. A 19th-century four-panel door, with the upper two panels glazed, is located to the centre right, framed by timber architrave. To the left, there is a broad former doorway opening in a chamfered stone surround, which is now blocked and has single-pane glazing in the upper part. A moulded drip course runs over the ground floor, and there is a moulded coved timber eaves cornice.

The building features three gabled dormers with 2-light timber casements, along with 19th-century bargeboards and finials. The rear elevation includes two small gables with 2-light chamfered stone-mullion windows, a large lateral stack, and a 19th-century lean-to extension.

Inside, No. 2 has two 19th-century fireplaces on the ground floor and boxed-out beams in the two front and rear right rooms. No. 2A has a late 17th-century to early 18th-century fireplace in the first-floor front left room, with rough unmoulded timber beams above. A late 17th-century to early 18th-century dog-leg staircase with splat balusters is also present. Nos. 2 and 2A Cecily Hill face onto Thomas Street.
