Description

Lower Mill is a building that combines a mill and an adjoining house. The mill likely dates from the late 18th century to early 19th century, while the house was built in the early to mid-19th century. It is constructed from coursed, dressed, and squared rubble stone, topped with a slate roof. The house features stone end stacks, with the right stack adjoining the mill.

The mill is two storeys tall and has a large rear extension added in the late 20th century. It has a prominent area of blind wall above the first floor, which includes six recessed paired six-pane casements with flat stone voussoirs, except for the second from the left that has a large stone lintel. On the ground floor, there are two similar windows to the left and one to the right of a central door in bay three, all with large stone lintels. There is also a worn stone four-centred archway with recessed double studded doors. The rear of the mill features three hipped dormers with paired casements through the eaves. At the south end, there are nine stone steps leading up to a 20th-century loft door.

The house to the left has two small coped gables with kneelers and paired six-pane casements. Its ground floor includes three wooden mullion and transom windows with glazing bars, and it has coped gable ends. Below the mill, the mill race retains its original stonework, including a side that has been worn by the mill wheel, which has since been removed.
