Description

Trewsbury (Coatesfield) Bridge is an accommodation bridge over the Thames and Severn Canal, built around 1785. It is constructed from limestone and features a single, segmental-arched opening that springs from wedge-shaped stone springers, lacking a dripmould. The wing walls are designed with an inward batter and curve outward from the arch, ending in pilaster terminals. Due to the narrow-waisted and battered shape of the bridge, the voussoirs of the arch step in slightly. The parapet is continuous with the wing walls and spandrels, rather than being a separate structure. It is level over the arch and gently slopes down in a straight line on either side to the ends of the wing walls, topped with a plain stone coping. There is some brick patching visible on the interior of the arch.
