Description
The Midland Bank is a Grade II* listed building, originally remodeled in the early 18th century. It stands two storeys tall, constructed of rubble with a Cotswold stone roof on the south side and a tiled roof on the north. The building features two ashlar chimneys, with the eastern gable chimney designed as an architectural highlight, complete with a cornice.
On the north side, there are three windows: the first-floor windows are glazing bar sashes with beaded edges, while the ground floor has two small irregular windows. The standout feature of the building is the east gable end, which rises to 2½ storeys and is made of ashlar. It includes segment-headed windows with glazing bar sashes set in beaded surrounds, topped with corniced keystones (one in the attic and two on the first floor). The gable also has a coped verge adorned with urn finials on large carved bases.
The bank's front, added during the inter-war period, showcases a Georgian style with two windows and a door on the right, featuring a moulded cornice. The south side of the building is irregular, featuring a dormered side chimney and two first-floor windows flanking a door. The ground floor is partially screened from the road by a later extension, whose south wall is approximately six yards long and eight feet high, contributing to the character of the High Street at this location. The Midland Bank forms an isolated block in the middle of the High Street, known as the Square.
