Description
A group of six Taylor monuments is located about 6 meters south of the blocked south door in the churchyard of the Church of St. Peter in Ampney St. Peter. This group includes a chest tomb and a row of five headstones. The chest tomb, which is unidentified, dates from 1759. The five headstones belong to the Taylor family, with the southernmost marking John Taylor, who died in 1764, and two unidentified stones likely from the late 18th century. The row continues with Rowena Taylor, who died in 1784, and Eleaner Taylor, who died in 1804, to the north. The monuments are made of limestone. The chest tomb features a stepped tent top with roll moulding, a moulded plinth and capping on the base, plain recessed ends, and a south side with fluted side strips, while the north panel has a fielded design with fielded side strips. The headstones are closely set, with one plain slab, two featuring recessed panels, and two adorned with carved cherub heads and cartouches. This collection of headstones is a well-preserved and varied representation of the period.
